Coffee pods allow you to enjoy delicious coffee in the comfort of your own home, but did you know the way you store them actually has an effect on their freshness and flavour.

Why should you store coffee pods properly?

Coffee can be affected by many factors. Too much heat, humidity and exposure to air and sun can all diminish the taste and smell of your coffee over time.

While your coffee pods packaging will keep it safe, it's still best to store them properly.

Storing your pods correctly will mean you:

  • Protect the coffee from conditions that may affect its flavour.
  • Keep your favourite blends tasting and smelling as intended.
  • Prevent packaging from becoming damp or damaged.
  • Keep your pods in good condition until you're ready to use them.
  • Make it easier to find your favourite coffee when you need it.

Follow our tips to ensure you can enjoy all of your coffee pods, without any waste.

Storing Your Coffee Pods The Right Way

You don't need any fancy equipment to store your coffee pods.

1. Store coffee pods in a cool dry place

You want to make sure your coffee pods are kept in a cool, dry environment that is free from high temperatures.

A cupboard or pantry would work perfectly, just ensure it's not near a heat source. Try not to leave your coffee pods in the sun or somewhere hot.

2. Protect your coffee pods from moisture

Moisture is another thing you want to avoid when storing your coffee pods.

Your pods will already be sealed, but you want to keep the packaging dry as well. If your coffee pods become moist they could lose their freshness, so try to keep them away from any water sources.

3. Leave your coffee pods in their packaging

Coffee pods are designed to keep their contents protected until brewing, so there is usually no need to remove them from their original packaging.

It is also helpful to have them in the box as you can see best before dates and identify different blends.

If you want to store your coffee pods somewhere you can see them, use a clean, dry storage container or organiser.

4. Do not refrigerate or freeze your coffee pods

There is no need to put your coffee pods in the fridge or freezer. Not only can this cause your packaging to get wet, but it can also shorten the life of your coffee.

For everyday storage, a cool, dry cupboard is usually the better option.

How long will my coffee pods stay fresh?

There will normally be a best before date on your coffee pods, which tells you how long they should stay at their optimal state if stored properly.

It does not mean the coffee is no longer safe to drink after this date, but you may notice your coffee lose freshness as it ages.

To get the best experience:

  • Try to consume the oldest coffee you have before opening new boxes.
  • If your coffee pods seal has been broken do not use them.
  • Follow manufacturers recommendation for storing your coffee.

Its always good practice to rotate your stock if you buy coffee pods in large amounts.

Should I use a coffee pod storage container?

A dedicated coffee pod holder isn't essential, but it can make your coffee setup more organised.

Storage drawers, racks and containers can help keep different blends together and make choosing your next coffee easier.

There are several popular storage options:

  • Store your coffee pods in a cupboard.
  • Use a coffee pod holder.
  • Buy a holder that displays your coffee pods.
  • Store your coffee pods in a sealed container.
  • Keep your coffee pods in their cardboard box.

As long as they're stored away from moisture and heat you should be fine.
